NAAN ( Making naan in induction stove with step by step tutorial)

Yum

Naan is a popular known indian bread, there are various variations in preparing them. As nowadays many use induction cook top for regular cooking, here i will be explaining how to make them in an electric stove. Naan is one of my favorite bread, it goes well with almost all curries and has great texture and taste. Traditionally naan is prepared in a tandoor oven, here you can find easy ways to cook in electric stove.

plain flour - 3 cups
dried yeast - 1 tablespoon
warm water - 11/2 cups
(Buttermilk or yogurt can be substituted for half cup water)
oil - 2 tablespoon
sugar - 1 teaspoon
salt - 1 teaspoon

PREP TIME : 1 HR 30 MINS          COOK TIME : 20 MINS

Activated yeast
forming dough
soft and sticky dough
dough after 30 mins, slightly risen, soft and non sticky
rolled naan
bubbles on one side
cooked one side
flipped and cooked the other side on pizza pan in stove top
  • In a small bowl, pour the required amout of water for making the dough, make sure the water is warm, add a teaspoon of sugar, dried yeast, salt, a tablespoon of oil and stir until the yeast is combined well. Place this bowl in a warm place for the yeast to form for about 20 mins. I kept them in the oven, after 20 to 30 mins you will notice some bubbles and when you smell it feels like a sour dough, thats the indication of activated yeast.
  • Now take a large bowl to knead the dough. In a large bowl add the flour, pour the activated yeast water to form a dough. The dough might be sticky, well thats how we want, as sticky dough makes soft naan. Add a tablespoon of oil and knead the dough, oil makes them soft and non sticky.
  • Place a damp cloth or a lid, so let the dough rest for about one hour. After an hour you will notice that the dough becomes soft and had risen a little. Do not rest the dough for long, 30 to 60 mins is fine.
  • Now dust the surface and make a small roundels like portion to roll the naan. As we dont have a tandoor oven and most of us use induction cook top nowadays. I prepared them in a electric stove and it was just the same as that of a restaurant naan.
  • If you have a pizza pan or a pulka tawa this can be made. Just place a pizza pan on one stove and the skillet or tawa on the other. Let them heat up at the same time.
  • Just grease the skillet , place the rolled naan, you will notice bubbles on top, where the cooked side shows brown spots.
  • Remove the naan from the skillet, flip the other side and place it on the pizza pan or the pulka mesh, so the direct heat will give the smokey texture as that of an oven. Once brown, remove and brush some butter /ghee.
  • To make garlic naan , just use some finely chopped garlic while rolling the dough and cook. Serve these with your favorite curries.
TIPS
  • Make it more healthy by using whole wheat flour.
  • While making naan, the skillet has to be super hot, so medium high or high falme is recommended
  • If you are making it in the electric oven, keep the setting on high, that 450 to 480 F  for about 2 mins to make naan.
