Yellow banana chips/ raw plantain chips/nedran chips/kerala chips

Yum

The raw banana chips or banana wafers are popular snack in southern india especially in kerala and tamil nadu. The chips taste sweet and salty and is so delicious.

Here is the simple and quick recipe to make this plantain chips. They are great in lunch box or as tea time snack.

Raw plantain or raw banana - 3 nos
water - 1 cup
turmeric - 1/2 teaspoon
oil for frying (coconut oil for authentic taste)
salt - 1 teaspoon diluted in water

Just remove the banana peel as shown in the video, by making a slit without cutting the banana. Once peeled, drop the plantain in 1 cup of normal water with a half teaspoon of turmeric. Let this soak for atleast 10 mins, soaking will remove the stickiness from the plantain and gives the yellow color. Remove from water and pat dry using paper towel. Once that is done, slice them thin but not super thin, I recommend using a slicer as it might time using knife. Now in a pot pour coconut oil for frying, coconut oil is normally used in frying these chips for that authentic flavor, but you can use any oil suitable for frying available in your pantry. Once hot, drop the sliced plantain one by one, now reduce the flame to medium, let it cook until it turns crisp, when you shake them in the ladle you could feel the sound of its crispiness. It took about 10 to 12 mins for me, however it depend on the stove top you are using. Once it cools down, store them in a air tight container and enjoy. These stay good for about 2 months at room temperature or even longer if you live in colder climates.
